NaNoWriMo 2014

October 14, 2014

You've decided to take on the challenge this year and join the NaNoWriMo Community! Congratulations! (If you are wondering what NaNoWriMo is all about, see their home page.) You've taken a big step in your writing career.

50,000 words in 30 days seems like a tall order, but let's break it down and look at a few tips to make it a lot less scary.

1. If you write everyday, you only have to produce 1,667 words each day. If you type at generous rate of 40 words per minute, it will take you about 45 minutes to type. Add in time for creativity and give yourself a good 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Can't find the time in your schedule (like me), try this: Write out our thoughts by hand while you're waiting somewhere, anywhere. Ballet class, soccer practice, doctor's office (it is germ season), getting your oil changed . . . See what I mean. Take that back to your computer and type it in. Less time in front of the screen.

2. Don't worry about quality. Just write. First drafts are never the best work. Use this as a catalyst to getting the fire going. No one is going to judge you, except yourself. Free your mind, and the rest will follow.

3. Join up with Writing Buddies. NaNoWriMo has skillful included a way to find like minds and nearby writers. And if you are part of any kind of on-line writers group or forum, chances are one of your fellow members is doing NaNo. Make a connection. Writing Buddies can help cheer you on and answer questions

4. It doesn’t matter what you write. Any genre goes. Get stuck? Skip the tough part for later.

5. There is no shame in not finishing. What matters is that you started. The spark is there and you ignited something in yourself. Keep writing when you have the time.

If this turns out to be your first or next great novel, find a proofread or editor to give it the professional treatment.
